Summer Activities

Join us for a calming and engaging introduction to yoga, mindfulness, and meditation! In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about the history of yoga, discovering its ancient roots and how it has been practiced for thousands of years to support physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Children will be guided through simple, age-appropriate yoga poses that help build strength, balance, and flexibility. Alongside movement, they will explore breathing techniques and short meditation practices designed to promote focus, relaxation, and self-awareness. These activities will help participants understand how yoga can be used as a tool for managing emotions and reducing stress. Throughout the session, children will have opportunities to practice mindfulness, listen to their bodies, and reflect on how movement and breathing affect how they feel. The workshop encourages a positive, supportive environment where students can move at their own pace and build confidence in both body and mind. This educational and interactive program is presented by the Summer Enrichment Program Interns of K-State River Valley Extension and is designed to promote wellness, mindfulness, and healthy habits through movement and self-awareness.

Travel back in time to ancient China and discover the incredible story of the Terracotta Warriors! In this hands-on history camp, participants will learn about Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the famous Terracotta Army, and why thousands of clay soldiers were created over 2,000 years ago. Through interactive activities and age-appropriate lessons, children will explore Chinese history, archaeology, and the importance of preserving artifacts from the past. After learning about these remarkable warriors, each participant will become an artist and historian by creating their own unique Terracotta Warrior-inspired soldier to take home. This creative project allows children to use their imagination while connecting with one of the world's greatest archaeological discoveries. This educational and engaging program is presented by the Summer Enrichment Program Interns of K-State River Valley Extension and is designed to inspire curiosity about history, cultures, and the ancient world.

Discover the amazing world of plants and pollinators in this hands-on science workshop! Participants will explore how plants grow and reproduce, focusing on the important role bees and other pollinators play in helping flowers turn into fruits and seeds. Through interactive activities, students will learn the basics of plant science, including what plants need to grow and how pollination works. They will discover how bees transfer pollen from flower to flower, helping plants produce the food we eat every day. Hands-on demonstrations and activities will bring these concepts to life in a fun and engaging way. Participants will also have the opportunity to plant seeds and explore garden science, connecting what they learn about pollination to real-world plant growth. This workshop encourages curiosity about nature, appreciation for pollinators, and an understanding of how plants and animals depend on each other. This educational and interactive program is presented by the Summer Enrichment Program Interns of K-State River Valley Extension and is designed to inspire a love of science, gardening, and the natural world.

Join us for a fun and tasty cookie decorating experience! Participants will learn simple cookie decorating techniques such as spreading icing, using sprinkles and toppings, creating patterns, and adding colorful decorations. This beginner-friendly class is designed to help children build confidence while expressing their creativity in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. After practicing a few decorating ideas, participants will have the opportunity to design their own unique cookies using a variety of colors and decorations. There is no right or wrong way to decorate—children are encouraged to use their imagination and create cookies that reflect their own style and personality. At the end of the class, participants will package up and take home all of their decorated cookies to share with family and friends or enjoy themselves. This hands-on program combines creativity, fine motor skills, and plenty of fun in a delicious learning experience. This program is presented by the Summer Enrichment Program Interns of K-State River Valley Extension and is designed to encourage creativity, self-expression, and hands-on learning through a fun culinary activity.

Join us for a hands-on sewing and crafting experience where creativity comes to life—literally! In this felt animal workshop, participants will design and create their own soft stuffed animals using felt and simple hand-stitching techniques. This workshop is designed to meet all experience levels, from beginners who have never sewn before to those with more crafting experience. Students will receive a kit to assemble that has been specially designed to meet their skill level. Step-by-step guidance will be provided, helping students learn basic sewing skills. Each student will leave with a completed handmade felt animal that reflects their own imagination and effort. This engaging and creative program encourages patience, fine motor skills, problem-solving, and self-expression while introducing children to the basics of hand sewing in a fun and supportive environment. Join us for a hands-on science workshop all about strawberries! In this engaging and interactive experience, participants will explore the life cycle of a strawberry plant—from seed to sprout, flowering plant, and finally the delicious fruit we enjoy. Students will learn how strawberries grow and what plants need to survive, including soil, water, sunlight, and care. Through visual models, hands-on activities, and simple experiments, children will discover each stage of the plant life cycle and see how living things change and grow over time. To make the learning even more fun, participants will also connect their science lesson to a sweet treat by learning how strawberries are used in foods like strawberry shortcake, helping them see how plants go from garden to table. Participants will have the opportunity to plant or build their own strawberry life cycle model, connecting science concepts to real-world agriculture and everyday foods. This workshop encourages curiosity, observation, and an appreciation for where our food comes from. Explore the layers of an ecosystem in the most delicious way possible! In this hands-on, edible science workshop, participants will learn about how ecosystems are structured from the ground up while creating their own edible “ecosystem in a cup.” Children will discover the different layers of soil, including topsoil, subsoil, and deeper earth, while using tasty ingredients to represent each layer. They will also learn about the important role of decomposers like worms, using gummy worms to show how these helpful creatures support healthy soil and plant life. Native grasses and plants will be introduced as the “living layer” that depends on the soil beneath it. As they build their edible ecosystems, participants will connect science concepts to real-world environments while engaging their senses and creativity. This activity helps children understand how all parts of an ecosystem—living and nonliving—work together to support life above and below the ground. This educational and interactive program is presented by the Summer Enrichment Program Interns of K-State River Valley Extension and is designed to inspire curiosity, hands-on learning, and a fun introduction to environmental science through food and creativity.

This hands-on Life Skills workshop helps students build confidence and prepare for real-world success through practical experience in job interviews, resume building, public speaking, and professionalism. Participants will learn how to introduce themselves in an interview setting, create a simple and effective resume, and practice communication skills that help them feel more confident when speaking in front of others. To strengthen real-world readiness, students will also use VR (virtual reality) headsets to simulate job experiences. Through interactive activities, role-playing, VR job simulations, and guided practice, students will explore what it means to present themselves professionally, communicate clearly, and build confidence. They will also practice public speaking strategies that support clarity, strong body language, and self-assurance. This engaging and supportive program is presented by the Summer Enrichment Program Interns of K-State River Valley Extension and is designed to equip students with essential life skills they can use now and in the future.

Get ready for a hands-on engineering adventure where creativity meets science! In this exciting Egg Drop Challenge, participants will explore basic physics and engineering concepts by designing and building a protective structure to keep an egg safe from a drop. Using a variety of scrap and recycled materials, students will plan, test, and construct their own protective designs while learning how forces like gravity, impact, and cushioning work in real-world situations. They will experiment with different shapes, structures, and materials to discover what helps absorb shock and prevent breakage. This challenge encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and creative thinking as participants brainstorm ideas, build prototypes, and test their final designs through an exciting drop experiment. After each drop, students will have the opportunity to reflect, improve, and understand what worked—and what didn’t—just like real engineers. This engaging and interactive program is presented by the Summer Enrichment Program Interns of K-State River Valley Extension and is designed to inspire curiosity in physics, engineering, and hands-on STEM problem-solving.

Join us for a fun and creative painting experience designed for young children and their parent or caregiver! This hands-on workshop gives little artists the chance to explore color, texture, and creativity while working side-by-side with a grown-up helper. Participants will be guided through a simple, age-appropriate painting project, with plenty of room for creativity and personal expression. Parents and children will work together to mix colors, make brushstrokes, and create a special piece of art they can proudly take home. This workshop is focused on bonding, creativity, and exploration rather than perfection—making it a relaxed and joyful experience for all. It’s a great opportunity for children to build confidence in their creativity while spending meaningful time with a parent or caregiver. Under guided instruction, participants will have the opportunity to personalize their creations and learn how tools and textures are used in traditional leather craft. This workshop emphasizes creativity, patience, and fine motor skills as students design and complete their own leather piece to take home. Join us for a fun, hands-on sewing experience where participants will learn the fundamentals of sewing while creating their very own pillowcase to take home! Whether you're brand new to sewing or looking to refresh your skills, this workshop is designed to help build confidence and creativity in a welcoming environment. Participants will be introduced to basic sewing techniques, including how to safely operate a sewing machine, thread the machine, sew straight seams, pin fabric, and measure and cut fabric accurately. Under guided instruction, each participant will sew a personalized pillowcase while learning important sewing skills that can be used for future projects.
